BGen Scott McKenzie grew up in the city of Abbotsford located in the Fraser Valley of British Columbia, long a hotbed of Canadian rugby. He began playing rugby early on, donning a jersey for both his school teams and for the Abbotsford Rugby Football Club, eventually representing the region at the U-17 and U-19 age group level and winning a gold medal at the British Columbia Summer Games as a member of the Fraser Valley Representative side. After enrolling in the Canadian Armed Forces in 1989, he relocated to Vancouver Island, playing for Royal Roads Military College for four years while periodically representing the Vancouver Island region at the U-19 and U-21 age group level.

Throughout his career as an Army officer, BGen McKenzie has managed to find a club to play with wherever he has been posted, and has pulled on the jersey for such teams as the Petawawa Stags, Deep River Blues, Alliston Timberwolves, Kingston Panthers and the St Albert Rugby Football Club (along with many other one-time club appearances at tournaments and assorted Rugby fests). Particular playing career highlights include suiting up for the Canadian Forces Combined Services team in 1996-1997 and his two years as a graduate student playing for the Royal Military College of Canada side, during which he was twice selected as an Ontario University Athletics All-Star and named Co-MVP of the team in 2000.

Having reluctantly, and finally, accepted that competitive rugby is now beyond his reach, BGen McKenzie is currently a member of the Ottawa Senators Old Boys club where he trains and attempts to play the occasional match. In 2018 he was thrilled to be appointed as the CAF Rugby Patron by the Chief of the Defence-Staff, and looks forward to working with all members of the passionate military rugby community across the country to advance the cause of a sport whose base characteristics; fitness, toughness, teamwork and resiliency in the face of adversity; are so completely in line with the values and ethos of the Canadian Armed Forces.
