This is just a sampling of the programs and services available to youth of military families. You can explore the website to see what's available in your community. 

When you consult the resources listed in this overview, note that:

  • The Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) offer some resources exclusively to members and their families. 
  • Other resources support the children and youth of current and former civilian employees of the Department of National Defence (DND) and the Staff of the Non-Public Funds, Canadian Forces. 
  • Some resources are available to the public, and may be specific to a province, region, or territory. Contact directly them to get more information.

Offers inclusive crisis services 24/7 in English, French, and Arabic. Contact them at the toll-free telephone line at 1-800-668-6868, text CAFKIDS to 686868 on your mobile device or via Skype. They also offer the following services:

Hope for Wellness Helpline 


(For Youth 12+) 
Provides immediate mental health counselling and crisis intervention to Indigenous peoples across Canada. Contact the Helpline’s 24/7 toll-free telephone line at 1-855-242-3310, or chat online with a counsellor. Upon request, telephone counselling services are available in Cree, Ojibway, and Inuktitut.

Crisis Services Canada

(For any age. If under 13 years old, you have to inform a parent/adult) 
Offers crisis support to all Canadians on a 24/7 and toll-free basis at 1-833-456-4566. This line provides information about distress centres and crisis organizations in your area and an inclusive national network of on-line resources. Connect via text message at 45645 from 4 p.m. to 12 a.m. ET.

Strongest Families Institute

Offers bilingual mental health coaching services for children, youth, adults, and their families. These services include timely and accessible care in six tele-distance programs to address behavioural problems such as anxiety, pain and bed-wetting.

PREVNet

Canada's practices, programs, and policy hub providing information about healthy youth relationships as well as the prevention of bullying, cyberbullying, and youth dating violence. 

Healing in Colour

A national network of Black, Indigenous and people of colour (BIPOC) therapists, allied professionals, and resources committed to supporting individual and collective healing for BIPOC.

Bounceback

Offers a guided self-help program for youth aged 15 and up who are experiencing mild-to-moderate anxiety or depression or who are feeling low, stressed, worried, irritable, or angry.

This online service offers free tutoring assistance to children of military families aged five to eighteen who need help with French, English, or math homework.  Military Family Services works in partnership with elementary and secondary school partners in Canada to provide this service.

A Government of Canada website that provides information about studying in Canada. This website can also help you search for schools and find scholarships.

Parentsofblackchildren.org

Can help you as a parent if your children experience racism and discrimination at school or in the child welfare system. This website provides an Education Systems Navigator to support you every step of the way and a confidential request form to get the guidance you need.
Inclusive Education Canada

Advocates for the integration of disabled students in an inclusive education system. It does this by promoting the benefits of diversity, cooperation, and consideration of others in an inclusive system as well as exposing the inherent barriers to learning opportunities, support, and relationship building in a separate system.

Support Our Troops: National Scholarship ProgramSupporting education for military family members. Due to the unique circumstances of military life, funds for pursuing post-secondary education are a significant barrier for many Canadian Forces families. The National Scholarship Program works to remove some of those barriers.
Support Our Troops: Other Scholarship OpportunitiesFind a listing of a variety of additional scholarships and bursaries available to serving and former Canadian Armed Forces members and their families that are not administered by Support Our Troops.
Veterans Affairs Canada: Educational Assistance for childrenThe cost of post-secondary education can be a financial burden. If you are the child of a deceased Veteran or Canadian Armed Forces member, you may qualify for funding to help with those costs. 
Government of Canada: Student aid and education planning

This planning information covers scholarships, education requirements by career, support for apprentices, paying for education, RESPs, education planning, budgeting tips, paying off student debt and studying abroad.

Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC)

If you're a member of the PSAC, you or a member of your family can apply to receive one of 14 scholarships. Eleven of these scholarships are for dependent children of PSAC members, while the others target PSAC members who are returning to postsecondary studies on a full-time basis.

Union of National Defence Employees (UNDE)

If you're a member in good standing of UNDE, your dependents may apply for a scholarship that this Union offers.  Your grandchildren and permanent foster children may also be eligible for an UNDE scholarship.

Military families with special needs dependents can apply year-round for a Special Needs Grant to assist with assessments and reassessments, as well as to offset some extraordinary costs associated with things like specialized devices, respite care, therapy, and medical travel.

Canadian Association of Guide and Assistance Dog Schools
Provides information about Canadian guide dog and assistance dog training organizations. You should also consult the DND/CAF Ombudsman's office to learn about Travelling with Service Dogs.

St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program 

Provides therapy dog services in many community settings across Canada. These settings include hospitals, seniors’ residences and care facilities, schools, universities, colleges, community centres, and libraries.

Learn about how companion and service animals can improve the health and quality of life of a member of your family who faces physical, emotional, and social challenges.

Learn about the benefits of therapeutic riding for a family member 

Wounded Warriors Canada
Since 2012, WWC has contributed over $3M to training and pairing of PTSD Services Dogs benefiting injured Veterans and First Responders.  Properly trained PTSD Service Dogs can and do change and save lives.

Support Our Troops Summer Camps ProgramAn extremely popular grant program in which eliglble serving military families receive reimbursement for their dependents to attend an accredited summer camp of their choice. 

Cadets and Junior Canadian Rangers 

Positive youth development programs for Canadians aged 12 to 18. Cadets can help your children to develop skills that will aid in their transition into adulthood and contribute to good citizenship, leadership, and physical fitness. The Junior Canadian Rangers program benefits youth who live in remote Canadian communities through the learning of practical skills and cultural practices in a fun and friendly social environment.

Royal Canadian Legion 

Offers youth leadership development activities at the local and national levels through sports, education, and community service.

Government of Canada youth leadership and cultural programs 

Enjoy learning and adventure, friendship and discovery as you take part in work experiences, internships, park activities and language immersion programs.

Scouts Canada 

Offers programming for children and youth aged 5 to 26 in multiple languages and reflecting Canada’s multicultural society. This programming helps build resilience and skills that benefit scouts throughout their lives.

Girl Guides of Canada 

Provides a safe, all-girl environment that invites girls from all walks of life and lived experiences to meet new friends, feel a sense of belonging, challenge themselves, find their voice, have fun, and make a difference.

4H Canada 

Offers innovative, youth-centred programs which provide meaningful, positive experiences that build confidence, positive self-identity, self-esteem, and a sense of achievement.

A charity that educates youth on mental health issues so that they can identify and dismantle barriers to positive mental health in their communities.
