Understanding Grief

Losing a loved one can be one of the hardest and most stressful events in one’s life.

Those who experience the loss of a loved one often live with feelings of isolation. When someone we love dies, we can feel devastated and our own world can fall apart. Grief is a roller coaster with many ups and downs. Sometimes we may think we are coping well when suddenly we are overcome by an overwhelming sense of grief from missing the person and the reality of their absence. This feeling is normal. Grief takes time.

Remember:

  • There is no magic cure to grieving.
  • It is normal to feel emptiness and an array of mixed feelings.
  • Respect your needs and limits. You may be more vulnerable and fragile due to your loss.
  • Surround yourself with positive people who accept your grief and your new reality.
  • Take your time, be generous with yourself and live one hour or one day at a time.
  • Be patient with yourself and ask your friends and loved ones to be patient too.
  • Taking care of yourself is the most important thing you can do. Find what works for you.
